St Dunstan’s College Buys the Private Banks Sports Ground in Catford

St Dunstan’s Educational Foundation is pleased to announce that it has bought the Private Banks Sports Ground which is in Catford on Canadian Avenue. This 20 acre property doubles the land available to St Dunstan’s College and will further enhance the sporting and other facilities available to all of its pupils. The site will also continue to provide playing fields, five-a-side football pitches, a gym, dance studio and function rooms for hire by local people and teams.

St Dunstan’s has renamed the site as the Jubilee Ground and intends to invest to improve the quality of the playing areas and to develop the facilities in the pavilion. The College will also be working with Lewisham Council to improve access and with the local Police to improve security immediately in order to comply with the laws on child protection in schools.

SDC top school for swimming

Members of the Junior School swimming team competed in the Lewisham Schools Gala on Friday night and did so with great success. St Dunstan's retained the top school shield by the greatest margin ever, and won gold in both the medley and freestyle relays. Nick Shoppee won the Year 6 top boy award; Liam Raabe was top boy in Year 5 and Amelia John top girl in Year 5. St Dunstan's children were awarded many more medals during the thrilling finals. Congratulations to every member of the team as all performances contributed to the overall result.

SDC pupil crowned Surrey Counties Champion Swimmer

SDC pupil Amelia John, Year 5, was crowned the 9 year old girls Surrey Counties Champion Swimmer. To accomplish this Amelia has competed over the past three weekends and won six Gold medals.

SDC Pupil in Sponsored Climb

SDC pupil Ben Morris, 8G, will be taking part in a sponsored race to the top of the Gherkin for the NSPCC's Child Line. Ben, along with his family, will have to climb the 1,087 steps to the top in a timed event.

Internet Safety Information Evening

Purely for Parents: Internet Safety Information Evening

Thursday 9 February 2012, 6.30pm - 7.30pm

As a school we encourage the use of technology as an important part of our pupils'

development but always want them to spend their time online safely.

Parents can play

a significant part in ensuring this yet the percentage of parents of children aged

12 - 15 that feel their children know more about the internet than they do is surprisingly high

- 70% (Ofcom media literacy 2011).

You are warmly invited to an Information Evening at the school, which is aimed at

enabling parents to understand some of the issues and inherent risks associated with

new technologies, along with the opportunity to share ideas about how to reduce these

risks.

with the number of people attending along with the

school year(s) of child(ren) by the end of Monday, 6 February.

Senior Maths Challenge

St Dunstan's Senior Maths Challenge Team came 16th out of 63 teams in the National Final on 1st February. Roughly 1500 teams take part each year.

U13 Kent County Netball Tournament 2012

The U13 Netball team travelled over to Aylesford to take part in the annual county netball championships. With 70 schools taking part the morning was divided into several groups, with 7 schools in each group. The U13’s battled hard and applied continued controlled pressure in each of their six games – after winning all first round matches the SDC teachers, parents and players travelled over to the Rainham site for the afternoon stage of the competition.

Round two was tougher than the first stage; however the girls remained strong and focussed whilst playing against Newstead Woods which resulted in another win. SDC were now in the quarter finals and went through to face the strongest eight remaining schools. SDC faced Bromley High in the quarters and again came away with another win. The SDC U13 team stormed through into the semi-finals to face Tunbridge Wells Girls Grammar School (TWGGS).

Overall the play was fantastic from the U13’s who narrowly lost out on a spot in the final to TWGGS, however, they finished in fourth place overall proving themselves to be one of the best teams in the county. It was a superb day of netball with the girls showing both technical and tactical strength to beat the majority of the oppositions. Well done SDC U13’s on a very impressive display of both netball and determination to succeed.

OD reaches Masterchef Final 10

Old Dunstonian Jonathan Dale (1995) has made it into the Final 10 on Series 8 of the popular BBC show Masterchef . Best known at school for his prowess on the rugby pitch and in the swimming pool, Jonathan has been highly praised by show hosts John Torode and Gregg Wallace, with his mushroom risotto in Episode 4 being called “one of the best dishes of the day”.

Three of our Sixth Form pupils land Oxbridge places

Congratulations to three of our Sixth Form pupils who have been offered Oxbridge places. Red Tie prefect Rosie Peck has been offered a place at St John's College - University of Oxford to study Human Sciences; Amy Provan has received an offer from Downing College - University of Cambridge to study Philosophy; and Philip Thomson has an offer to read Computer Science at Magdalene College, Cambridge.
